READING HERODOTUS
A Guided Tour through the Wild Boars, Dancing Suitors,
and Crazy Tyrants of The History
By Debra Hamel
"Hamel presents Herodotus and his material in an original, illuminating, and entertaining way. By leading the reader through Herodotus’s text from beginning to end, the book provides an accessible introduction both to Herodotus and to an exciting period of Greek history, which culminates in the Persian Wars."

It's BAFAB Week! And CONTESTS! And TWITTER!

buyafriendabook.comHappy BAFAB Week, everybody! And it's time to celebrate here at the deblog. But first things first: BAFAB stands for Buy a Friend a Book, and BAFAB Week is a quarterly holiday with the avowed purpose of promoting good books and good karma. One celebrates by, simply, surprising someone with the gift of a book at some time during the week. Head on over to the Buy a Friend a Book site for more details, and to read book recommendations from me and from this week's guest reviewer, author Alex Espinoza.

Now, in celebration of BAFAB Week, a lot of bloggers have taken to throwing book-related contests and giveaways. I have an ever-expanding list of those contests going over at the BAFAB site's blog. And, happily, it's an autolink widget thing, which is to say that you can add links to it yourself. If you're throwing a BAFAB contest, or someone you know is, you're free to head over and add your blog's name and the permalink of your contest post to the list. Thanks!

Finally.... I've decided what to do for BAFAB this week, and I think it's exciting. Here's what I'm doing. I've created a Twitter account for BAFAB, to which you can subscribe for the occasional BAFAB-related tweets. (If you don't already use Twitter, go get an account and try it out, because it's the coolest thing on the net these days.)

How to play:

1. Add BAFAB as a friend on Twitter.
2. Sometime between April 1st and the end of April 7th, 2007, post about BAFAB on Twitter. Preface your tweet with "BAFAB."

You might write, for example:

BAFAB: Reading book recommendations at http://www.buyafriendabook.com

Or:

BAFAB: Entering BAFAB contest at http://www.the-deblog.com. I want to win War and Peace!

Remember that you've only got 140 characters on Twitter to get your point across.

What you'll win:

The winner will be shipped via Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk a book of their choice (valued at, say, $20 or less).

Fine print:

Selection method: The participants' names will be written on small slips of paper and deposited in an appropriate receptacle. My daughters will then fight over which of them will be allowed to draw the winning slip. After a cry of "First blood!" the victorious daughter will draw the winner. The winner will be notified via Twitter and will then be required to cough up book choice, etc.
